To My Dear and Loving Husband

Interestingly, To My Dear and Loving Husband, a poem written by Anne Bradstreet, wasn't published until 1678 - 6 years after her death, yet it is still a beautiful poetic testament for the love she had for her husband. It is found in her self-revised "Several Poems Compiled with Great Variety of Wit and Learning".

What makes this woman even more interesting is that she was the very first American female writer and poet to have her works published (although her first work wasn't published in Amercia). This came about in 1647 when her brother-in-law, Rev. John Woodbridge, traveled to London taking with him her manuscript of poetry without her knowledge, which set her on course to be one of the most well-recognized female poets in history.

by Anne Bradstreet (c.1612-1672)

If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were lov'd by wife, then thee.
If ever wife was happy in man,
Compare with me, ye women, if you can.

I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee give recompence.

Thy love is such I can no way repay;
The heavens reward thee manifold I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so perservere,
That when we live no more, we may live ever.
