Oriental Wedding Theme

This is not an exact composite of an oriental wedding. Instead, it will give you general ideas and customs of what you may wish to include should you be planning an Asian/Chinese wedding celebration.

Orchids

Wedding colors for an oriental wedding would be red and yellow. White is not used, since it is associated with funerals, so don't include white on your invitations, decorations or bridal clothing.

Oriental Bridal Attire:

  • Bride:
    • Red silk brocade gown (with or without a jacket) with a chinese dragon and/or phoenix embroidered in yellow. Red shoes and red veil which covers the face, and a phoenix crown (a traditional headpiece worn by the bride). You could carry a colored hand fan, off-white orchids, lotus flowers or peonies.

  • Bridesmaids:
    • Solid yellow or red silk brocade dresses, red flower in hair, red sash around waist and carry sandlewood fans. Don't forget red or yellow slippers.

  • Groom:
    • The groom is also dressed in red with a dragon or phoenix embroidered on the jacket.

  • Groomsmen:
    • Solid yellow or solid red jackets.

    Asian Style Invitations:

    • If you like, use the Chinese symbol for double happiness on your invitations and other paper items.

    • Do not use red ink on pure white paper, as white signifies death and is used at funerals. Gold on reddish colored paper works fine, and you can get away with a cream colored paper.

    • You could also have the Chinese dragon or phoenix images on the invitation.

Authentic Chinese food of course! Peking duck, rice, egg rolls, roasted suckling pig, vegetable stir-fries, chinese teas, etc.

    Entertainment For Your Wedding:

    • Put full size Mah Jong tiles on tables for guests to play.

    • Play Chinese music and have an instructor teach some traditional Chinese dances.

    • Hire someone to tell Chinese zodiac fortunes.

    • If allowed (with permit), set off firecrackers.
