Make Your Own Unique Wedding Centerpieces

Follow along as this video shows you how to make unique wedding centerpieces with an urn, tree branch, moss and some bird nests.

It's an excellent wedding centerpiece idea for a spring wedding, however, at the end of the video you'll see this centerpiece not only displayed on a spring wedding table, but transformed into a winter wedding reception centerpiece too!

After the video, I've provided a list of materials used, plus additional ideas on how you can use the basis of this centerpiece to make your own unique wedding centerpieces for several other wedding themes. Enjoy!

Materials Needed

Here are the materials mentioned in the video. Most can be found at a Dollar Store or a craft store. Try to find a really cheap urn or vase to use, since you'll be painting it.

  • Tall urn or cheap vase
  • White spray paint
  • Plaster of Paris
  • Masking tape
  • Large branch
  • 2 to 3 bird nests (from craft store)
  • Bird or two (from craft store)
  • Bright green deer moss
  • Glitter spray
  • Green button mums
  • Green orchids
  • Green berries
  • Larger green mums or other similarly colored flower
  • Green floral foam
  • Sharp knife
  • Some plastic wrap
  • Glue sticks and glue gun
  • Remember, you can change the color from green to whatever colors you have planned for your wedding.

For example, are you planning on having a color scheme of pink and green? Then add in a few pink flowers to tie it together.

Are your wedding colors brown and blue? Leave or paint the nests brown and use blue flowers within the nests. Add blue birds to the branches and use brown moss at the base instead of green and enhance the brown with a few clusters of blue flowers.

    The Wedding Favors

For the coordinating wedding favors you will need: a bird's nest painted white, some green moss, 3 French soaps in the shape of eggs, cellophane wrap, a twist tie, and some coordinating ribbon. Simple!

Now, here are some other great unique wedding centerpieces that you can create with this particular design.

    Winter Wedding Centerpiece

The white of the urn and branch are perfect if you are planning a winter wonderland wedding theme.

Begin by adding glittering white and ice blue snowflake ornaments and perhaps a few hanging crystal icicles. Paint your nests ice blue and fill with white cotton "snow" batting instead of moss.

Use winter wedding flowers such as white roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, grape hyacinth and stock. Mix it up with pale blue floral's such as hyacinths, hydrangeas, irises (douglasiana), lily (spring squill), or Spring Starflower (another type of lily).

Can't find any icy blue type flowers? Have the tips of white flowers dyed or use silk flowers instead, as they come in all sorts of colors not normally found in nature.

For coordinating favors, nestle small ornaments, miniature round ball candles or fragrant soaps in blue and white within the "nest".

    Butterfly Wedding Centerpiece

For a butterfly wedding theme use dark green moss at the base to give the appearance of grass. Create a nice arrangement using flowers that butterflies are attracted to such as sweet peas, columbine, asters, Shasta daisies, snap dragons and zinnias. Some greenery that could be used and that also attracts these beautiful insects are sage, dill, and oregano.

Instead of using nests within the branches, add some small clusters of flowers with butterflies filtering around them.

You could do something very similar for a hummingbird wedding theme. Just use flowers that attract hummingbirds instead.

    Halloween Wedding Centerpiece

Halloween provides a wonderful opportunity to create some very unique wedding centerpieces. For a Halloween wedding theme wedding paint your urns and branches black rather than white. Wire some bright orange miniature pumpkins to the branches instead of nests and include a miniature owl or two as your bird in the tree.

Arrange a few mini pumpkins at the base and create an arrangement of orange and purple flowers. Some excellent choices are: orange roses, Asiatic lilies, Gerbera daisies and viking poms. For purple flowers try: lisianthus, freesias or vanda orchids.

You could also use a ceramic or foam pumpkin or even a black cauldron as your base instead of a tall urn!

    Additional Thoughts...

As you can see, just starting with a painted urn and branch leads to a wealth of possibilities. It's elegant, yet fun; eye-catching, but not overwhelming.

Think about how this display could be used at your own wedding reception. I'm sure you can come up with lots of ideas.
